No other director captures our esteem quite like Pedro Almodóvar. His intricate plots, memorable characters, and luxurious style blend together to create captivating films that entertain as they inspire. The fact that they often have a queer/feminist slant doesn’t hurt either. Join us as we discuss Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988) and Bad Education (2004) this week on Ex Rated!

We’re Coen the distance this week with our first Coen brothers’ movie, Miller’s Crossing (1990). It’s a neo-noir gangster flick with scenes that are denser than flourless chocolate cake and a plot that’s twistier than a corkscrew. Impenetrable at first but ultimately rewarding, just like us! We also chat about heavenly bodies, wonder what makes straight men squirt a few, and scheme to get our money back. Ex Rated: Let’s Get Baked!
Sumptuous, sexy, smart. While these words could be used to describe the hosts of this show, they could also be used to describe Alfonso Cuarón’s gorgeous indie road trip movie/political allegory, Y Tu Mamá También (2001). Stylish oners, a devil’s threeway, and naked Gael García Bernal. Whaddya need? A road map? It’s Ex Rated: We Choose the Music!
Sunshine (2007), directed by Danny Boyle, is an otherwise well-made sci-fi illustration of Ethics 101 that is almost totally eclipsed by its shadowy third act surprise. Join us as we weigh the pros and cons of having a robot body, taking selfies with corpses, and watching sex scenes directed by Quentin Tarantino. Ex Rated: It’s Daylight Savings Time!
This week we dive headfirst into a blind-leading-the-blind adventure as we tackle the three-part BBC Two miniseries, Tipping the Velvet (2002). It’s an erotic, lesbian, coming of age story set in Victorian England and boy is it a doozy. Nothing is sacred as we discuss leather dildos, oyster shucking, and The Mooch. Ex Rated: It’s not bad, it’s better!
For this episode we welcome Trevor Vos of the Starboys podcast to nerd out with us about what is probably the most under-appreciated of the original cast Star Trek movies, Start Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991). Does the penal asteroid of Rura Penthe have an atmosphere? Do Klingons really read Shakespeare? Did David Bowie attend the premiere of this movie? Join us as we hurtle aimlessly through the cosmos on Ex Rated!
Simultaneously oddball and heartwarming, David Byrne’s True Stories (1986) is both a snapshot of modern day life in the 1980’s and a mockumentary of the people living in that time. Come along as we talk sprawling malls, DoubleMInt gum, and freeway interchanges. We also butcher the Friends theme and remember George Romero and Martin Landau. Ex Rated: Know what I mean? Or do you?

With Francis Ford Coppola’s Twixt (2011), the Exes encounter their most beguiling movie to date. Is it the work of a senile old wino who can no longer discern what quality is? Or is it the work of a master with a trained eye creating on a level beyond our comprehension? Join us as we scratch our heads and furrow our brows in utter consternation. If you don’t like Fritz Lang’s savvy, sophisticated, and ahead-of-its-time masterpiece M (1931) then you might want to ask yourself if you even like movies at all. Fortunately, Matt and Ryan do like this movie and talk about it at length for your listening pleasure! Is Tom Holland a minx? What really happened to Natalie Wood? Is salted caramel delicious or disgusting? All this and the return of the spoiler horn on this episode of Ex Rated!
We’re starting things off with a sploosh for our season four premiere with Magic Mike XXL (2015). It’s a road trip/buddy comedy that attempts to give male entertainers a legitimate second dimension. Oh, and there’s a bunch of hot shirtless guys too. Join us as Ryan asks numerous questions about Rome’s empire, Matt hates on lube that heats up, and we both engage in a little role reversal. Put your phones on vibrate, it’s Ex Rated!
